A Suffolk man was arrested early Thursday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Michael Odom Smith, 28, of the 100 block of Brittany Lane, was charged.
About 2:55 a.m., a Portsmouth police officer saw a blue Acura stopped in the roadway in the intersection of London Boulevard and Broad Street. The vehicle made a U-turn and then stopped at a green light, according to a press release from police spokeswoman Jan Westerbeck.
The officer pulled the driver over in the 1100 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue and conducted several field sobriety tests, Westerbeck said. The driver failed to properly perform them, she added, so he was charged with felony driving under the influence of alcohol.
During the stop, the officer allegedly recovered a loaded AR-15 assault rifle that had been lying on the front passenger seat, hidden from view. He was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon while intoxicated.
