Nominations sought for youth awards

Young people who excel in community service, leadership, athletics, the arts and other areas are sought for the 2012 Suffolk Youth Achievement Awards.
The awards will recognize young people in seven categories. They are presented by the Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission in conjunction with the Suffolk Office on Youth.
“These awards honor those youth who have significantly impacted the lives of local residents and, in the process, have inspired others to make a difference,” said a city press release.
The awards are open to all youth that reside in Suffolk.
The categories are outstanding community service, outstanding youth leadership, outstanding performing arts, outstanding athletic achievement (high school only), outstanding athletic participation (middle school only), the rising star award and outstanding group citizenship.
Nominating packets are due May 14. Requirements include the completed application packet, a letter of recommendation from the nominator, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, arts director or coach, proof of academic achievement, proof of community service, an essay written by the nominee and signatures of the nominee and his or her parent.
The awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m. June 5 at the Suffolk Hilton Garden Inn, 100 E. Constance Road.
