Nansemond River High School’s disappointing softball season continued on Wednesday with a 12-0 loss to visiting Grassfield.

The Lady Grizzlies, one of the top teams in the Eastern Region, scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-0 lead, ending the game under the mercy rule.

The second meeting between the two teams was the opposite of the first matchup, one in which the Lady Warriors led 3-0 in the fourth inning.

Following an inside-the-park home run from Sierra Shook that gave Grassfield a 6-0 lead, the Lady Warriors had their chance to close the gap in the fourth inning.

A single from Hope Mounie started the inning, and NR had two runners on second and third base with no outs. But the Lady Warriors could not move their runners home and left the inning scoreless.

Grassfield’s Stephanie Ellis and Hannah Burrmeister each hit triples in the fifth inning, on the way to six runs.

The Lady Grizzlies had five triples in the game, many of which were a result of the Lady Warriors not being able to field the ball. Every hit seemingly bounced away from NR’s infield, and the wind blew every ball the opposite direction of the Lady Warriors’ outfield.

NR will be in action again on Friday against Indian River.
