Paul D. Camp Community College student Ida Thompson, of Suffolk, has been selected to receive the Col. Lula B. Holland, U.S. Army (Ret.), MSW, BSN, AA Scholarship for the spring 2012 semester.

Helivi Holland, Lula Holland’s daughter, established the scholarship in her mother’s honor.

Thompson, who is majoring in education, is a member of the Kilby Shores Elementary School PTA. She volunteers as a translator for Spanish-speaking students at Suffolk Public Schools. Her goals are to major in psychology with a minor in education so that she can attain her LPC license. In addition, she plans to continue her community service.

Col. Holland returned to school after dropping out for several years. She earned her high school diploma at the age of 21. Continuing her education, she graduated with an associate of arts degree, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a master’s degree in social work. She retired from the Army Reserves as a colonel, having served as the chief nurse in the 18th Field Hospital. She is also retired from the city of Portsmouth, where she served as assistant director of the Department of Social Services.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a non-traditional PDCCC student living in Suffolk who is 21 years or older and who is enrolled in at least six semester hours of an associate or applied science degree program.

Holland’s daughter began her new duties recently as the Suffolk city attorney. Prior to that appointment, she served as the director of the state Department of Juvenile Justice.
