The Suffolk Department of Social Services currently is taking applications for tax relief for senior citizens or disabled people.

The program is only one of a number of tax relief options available to residents. Others include the land use program and tax relief for veterans.

The application period for the senior citizens and disabled people’s program runs through June 30. To qualify, applicants must be at least 65 years old as of June 30 or permanently and totally disabled. The total combined gross household income, in general, must not exceed $54,242, and the net combined financial worth excluding the value of the home and up to 10 acres of land upon which it is situated must not exceed $243,101.

In addition, veterans who have a 100-percent service-connected, permanent and total disability and occupy the property for which they’re applying as their principal place of residence can be exempt from taxation.

The veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran who died on or after Jan. 1, 2011, can apply with the Department of Social Services. The exemption also includes up to 10 acres of land upon which the home is situated. The exemption includes properties owned jointly by a husband and wife.

A surviving spouse must not be remarried and must continue to occupy the home to which the exemption applies.

In addition, a variety of land-use exemptions applies to various land.

The open space portion of the land use program was rescinded by City Council last year. However, the parcels still in the program will be allowed to stay in the program until their contract expires.

Other special circumstances can apply to agricultural, horticultural and forest uses. Landowners must apply for this program with the city real estate assessor at least 60 days on or before May 1.
