Suffolk police have charged two juveniles with attempted murder and arson in connection with the November burning of a North Fifth Street home.
The two suspects, plus a third juvenile also charged in the incident, are members of LSG, the Lloyd Street Gang, said Sgt. T.A. Smith of the Suffolk Police Department.
While investigating other gang-related crimes, to which the juveniles pleaded guilty earlier this week, police served search warrants that led them to suspect the juveniles had been involved in the arson.
“We learned that one of the gang members was trying to recruit” the two juveniles, Smith said. In addition, the older gang member wanted to get back at someone who lived at the house at 312 N. Fifth St.
“They came up with a plan to burn the house down” as a gang initiation for the two young people, Smith said. “Fortunately, the person they were trying to kill was not injured.”
One of the juveniles was charged with attempted murder, arson, three counts of gang participation and two counts of gang recruitment, Smith said.
Another was charged with attempted murder and gang participation. The third juvenile also was charged with lesser crimes.
They all are around 15 to 16 years old, Smith said.
“This also has led to other LSG investigations that will hopefully come to a successful close, as well,” Smith said.
The rental house on North Fifth Street was burned to the ground on Nov. 21. It also had a smaller fire on Nov. 14.
The same three members, plus a fourth member, pleaded guilty earlier this week to several felonies and misdemeanors for various assaults, firearms violations, vandalisms and other crimes linked to LSG, according to prosecutor Nicole Belote.
An 11-year-old member charged with assaulting a police officer also was in court the same day but had some attorney issues, so the plea was rescheduled.
