Lady Warriors thriving in college ball

Mount Olive’s women’s basketball team led 39-22 at halftime and fell behind as Fayetteville State made a huge run before regaining the lead with six straight points and going on to a 57-54 win Monday in Fayetteville, N.C.
Lady Trojan guard Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) made a lay-up as part of the late Mt. Olive run, turning the game back in Mt. Olive’s favor. Jones finished with 11 points.
Jones is averaging a team-high 19.1 points per game. Mt. Olive is 5-3 overall.
Junior guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) scored in double figures twice as South Carolina State won games on back-to-back days, beating Coastal Carolina 61-59 on Sunday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., then outrunning UNC-Asheville 92-82 on Monday back at SCSU in Orangeburg.
Fox made 3-of-3 field goals and 5-of-7 free throws in scoring 11 points in SCSU’s win over the Lady Chanticleers. Fox had 13 points, five rebounds and two assists in the win against Asheville.
Fox is averaging 8.0 points and 1.8 assists per game. The Lady Bulldogs (5-6) play again on Dec. 29 at Jacksonville.
In men’s hoops, Louisiana State gave No. 10 Marquette its first loss of the season. The Tigers beat the Golden Eagles 67-59 Monday evening in Baton Rouge, La.
Sophomore forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork), a recent addition to Marquette’s starting five, had seven points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Marquette (10-1) has two more games before going into Big East play, with the next date being versus Milwaukee on Thursday night.
Cincinnati romped to a 101-70 win over visiting Radford Saturday.
In his second straight game starting for the Bearcats, junior guard JaQuon Parker (King’s Fork) had nine points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Cincinnati (7-3) hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday night.
Chowan went 2-0 in a road trip to Florida with an 86-81 overtime win at
Florida Southern on Saturday followed up with a 53-49 win at the University of Tampa on Monday.
Junior forward Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) had 12 points and eight rebounds for CU against Florida Southern, then 15 points and six boards against Tampa.
Chowan (6-5) is off until Dec. 30 and a trip to West Virginia Wesleyan.
