Warriors edge Cavs in city rivalry

Lakeland led most of the game and was leading Nansemond River 38-37 going to the fourth quarter before the host Warriors gained a 42-41 lead on Dontrell Brite’s jumper and went on to a 52-45 win at Nansemond River’s sold out gym Friday evening.
Shannon Evans made a key three-pointer and the Warriors (3-0, 3-0) forced four Cavalier turnovers in the last two minutes. Evans scored 15 points and had four steals. Brite, NR’s senior point guard, had 11 points, 10 steals and six assists.
Rodney Goodman led Lakeland (2-3, 2-1) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Samson Worrell had 11 points, including 3-of-4 three-point shooting.
Starting with eight straight points to open the second period, Lakeland won the second quarter 20-10 for a 24-19 halftime lead. Goodman scored seven points in the second period. The Cavaliers stayed in front until Brite’s jumper put NR up by a point with 5:02 remaining in the game.
The Warriors blocked 16 shots, with Daniel Wallace getting eight points, 12 rebounds and six blocks inside.
Nansemond River hosts Deep Creek Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Lakeland plays at Great Bridge Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
