Rodgers leads Lady Hoyas in Vegas

Junior TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgerswas the Tournament MVP at the Lady Rebel Round-Up for leading Georgetown in back-to-back wins over previously undefeated opponents Saturday and Sunday in Las Vegas.
Georgetown beat No. 10-ranked Georgia 64-56 with Rodgers hitting four three-pointers as part of scoring 23 points.
The Lady Hoyas (5-2) won the tournament with a 64-45 rout over host UNLV. Rodgers tallied 16 points, including four more three-pointers, with five rebounds and three assists.
Along with the MVP award in Las Vegas, Rodgers earned a spot on the Big East’s Weekly Honor Roll.
Georgetown has a much closer road trip, with a game at Coppin State on Wednesday night in Baltimore.
Old Dominion answered an opening Norfolk St. touchdown with 35 straight points and rolled to a 35-18 win in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision (Division 1-AA) Playoffs in the first-ever gridiron meeting between the Norfolk universities Saturday at Foreman Field.
ODU (10-2) advances to a trip to No. 3-ranked Georgia Southern on Saturday.
Freshman defensive lineman George Riddick (King’s Fork) had a tackle for the Spartans. Riddick played in 10 games this season.
NSU (9-3) won the MEAC football championship for the first time in program history this season.
CIAA football champion Winston-Salem State moved to a 12-0 record and advanced into the final eight of the NCAA Division II Playoffs with a 35-28 win over visiting California (Pa.) on Saturday.
Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) had one catch for eight yards for the Rams. Freeney had two touchdown catches in the regular season for WSSU in his first season there after transferring from East Carolina.
WSSU, ranked No. 3 in the nation, hosts No. 2 New Haven in the regional championship and national quarterfinal on Saturday.
Liberty’s women’s basketball team got a win and a loss playing in a tournament at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
Starting guard Terika Lunsford (Lakeland) had nine points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Flames fell 76-45 to No. 12 Oklahoma in the first round on Friday.
Liberty bounced back to beat Lipscomb 70-27 on Saturday. Lunsford had five points, three rebounds and two assists.
Liberty (3-3) hosts James Madison Thursday evening.
Chowan battled Div. I opponent East Carolina until well into the second half before the Pirates pulled away for a 78-62 win over the Hawks on Saturday in Greenville, N.C.
Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River), a 6-foot-5 power forward, scored 22 points and got nine rebounds for the Hawks.
Chowan (2-4) led through parts of the first half and were still close, with the Pirates leading 51-48, seven minutes into the second half. ECU put together a 13-4 run to have a 64-52 lead with 6:55 remaining.
