Officers showed compassion, humanity

To the editor:
Today, a tragedy happened on Wilroy Road in Suffolk. An innocent life was lost, and no one seemed to notice.
Someone rushing to work, maybe talking on a cell phone, maybe drinking coffee, did not see the young buck. They slammed into the buck and kept going. They did not report the accident.
The animal lay in the cold ditch in so much pain. His back was broken. Time passed, and someone saw the injured animal and called 911.
Soon, a big and tough-looking police officer showed up. He checked on the deer, and he knew what he had to do, a simple act of kindness for the young deer. The shots rang out in the foggy morning air. No more pain, no more fear, no more suffering.
The officer put his gun away and walked back to his car. He did the right thing, the most humane thing he could do. But I could see the remorse on his face.
Many cars rushed past the crippled young buck in the cold ditch, and no one seemed to care. My heart goes out to this fine officer. He did care.
