John and Pamela King, who own three Firehouse Subs restaurants, including two in Suffolk, were honored on Saturday during the 11th annual Hampton Roads Crime Lines Dinner and Top Cop Awards in Newport News.

The Kings, whose Suffolk restaurants are located downtown and in Harbour View, were given the 2011 Top Individuals awards because of their demonstrated commitment to a safer community and especially for their work on behalf of the Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Departments, according to Suffolk spokesperson Diana Klink.

“Pam and John King are highly committed to the profession of law enforcement,” Police Chief Thomas Bennett said in a press release from the city. “As both a business owner and an auxiliary officer, John King and his wife, Pam King, a fire marshal, demonstrate their commitment on a daily basis. They are highly deserving of this recognition.

Firehouse Subs and the Kings donate food, drinks and snacks to feed the public safety officers who work at Suffolk Peanut Festival each year. The Kings also deliver trays of food to the families involved any time a member of the police or fire and rescue departments lose family members.

The Kings and their company also donated $4,000 worth of food to assist emergency and public safety personnel during and after Hurricane Irene.

Last year, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and the Kings donated $19,800 to purchase equipment and training for the city’s police department. The purchase included a Total Station Unit, which forensic personnel use at crime and accident scenes to capture measurements and other pertinent information.

Nominations for the Crime Lines awards come from law enforcement agencies, civic leaders, key individuals and business leaders throughout the Hampton Roads area.
