Lakeland (5-1, 4-1) at Grassfield (6-0, 5-0) – 7 p.m.
Last season – Grassfield 38, Lakeland 14
The Cavaliers returned from a brief break in routing opponents with a 53-3 triumph over visiting King’s Fork Friday and moved up a spot, to No. 2, in the Division 5 regional power ratings.
The Grizzlies, who along with Oscar Smith are the last unbeaten teams in Southeastern play, are No. 3 in the Div. 6 ratings. Grassfield won 35-21 at Western Branch on Friday.
The Grizzlies held foes to 13 points or less in their previous five wins. Grassfield’s racked up 11 interceptions this season.
When Grassfield has the ball it’ll be a contrast in styles. The Grizzlies rushed for 236 yards against Western Branch and 300 yards two weeks earlier in a win over Indian River. Meanwhile, Grassfield hasn’t topped 100 passing yards in a game this season.
Freshman junior varsity call-up Miles Goodman made a memorable debut as the third Cavalier quarterback this season. Goodman went 9-for-11 passing for 159 yards, two passing TDs and two rushing TDs in the 53-3 win.
Goodman’s introduction allowed Raekwon Johnson to return full-time, almost, to his running back spot where he rolled for 186 yards and two TDs against King’s Fork.
Nansemond River (3-3, 2-3) at Great Bridge (4-2, 3-2) – 7 p.m.
Last season – Great Bridge 64, Nansemond River 14
The Warriors, tied for eighth, and the host Wildcats, in seventh, are bubble mates in the Div. 5 power ratings/playoff chase.
Last week, Great Bridge pummeled winless Deep Creek 51-7. The Warriors were upset by previously-winless Indian River 12-10.
GB senior Adriell Mayes rushed for 223 yards and four touchdowns, plus returned a fumble for a 70-yard touchdown as a linebacker, in the Wildcat win.
Great Bridge has won four straight since starting the season 0-2.
Stevon Simms made it back-to-back games with a kickoff return for a touchdown, returning the opening kick 95 yards to put the Warriors ahead against Indian River.
There are far too many games left for scoreboard watching but Green Run (2-4) is tied in eighth with NR and Churchland (2-4) is close behind in 10th in the divisional ratings.
Hickory (3-3, 2-3) at King’s Fork (1-5, 1-4) – 7 p.m.
Last season – Hickory 49, King’s Fork 12
The Bulldogs will try to bounce back after a doubly tough week last week. King’s Fork was in the game until the end in a 12-7 loss to Western Branch on Monday before Friday’s 50-point loss at Cavalier Park.
Hickory’s trying to rebound from losing to the last two undefeated teams in the district back-to-back, 21-0 to Grassfield and 48-7 to Oscar Smith.
The Hawks moved the ball well against Oscar Smith, gaining 16 first downs. Three turnovers and having little way to stop Oscar Smith’s passing, as the Tigers threw for 287 yards and five touchdowns, added up to a blowout.
Hickory running back Terrance Gray rushed for 236 yards combined in the last two Hawk wins, versus Deep Creek and Western Branch.
Norfolk Academy (2-3, 1-1) at Nansemond-Suffolk (2-4, 0-2) – 7 p.m.
Last season – Nansemond-Suffolk 28, Norfolk Academy 7
Nansemond-Suffolk started out 0-4 before two victories, 20-6 at Virginia Episcopal and 42-6 at Portsmouth Christian.
Norfolk Academy was 0-3 before two wins, 35-8 against Hampton Roads and 27-14 against Covenant last Thursday.
NSA fullback/lineman David Gough carried three times for three touchdowns, on runs of 40, 1 and 4 yards, in the Saints’ rout of Portsmouth Christian. The Saints piled up 234 rushing yards total.
NSA scored five touchdowns and had the first-half clock run out for their first six times with the ball last Friday.
