Clarence Woodrow “Red” Jones, 96, of Richmond, formerly of Suffolk, died Sept. 18, 2011 after a brief illness.

Born in Red Oak, N.C., he was the son of the late Sadassa May Pullen and Walter Gould Jones. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Annie Maude Harrell Jones, who died two years ago. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Herman, Edward and Walter.

He was a graduate of Rocky Mount High School and moved to Suffolk in 1936. He was a sales representative for Peoples Life Insurance Co. for 42 years. He was a member of B.&P.O. of Elks, U.S.A, Suffolk Christian Church, former deacon, and the Baracca Men’s Bible Class. He was an avid ACC sports fan and a supporter of the Baltimore Orioles. He held a lifelong interest in poetry and authored many unpublished poems.

Survivors include twin daughters, Jacquelyn Jones Stone (Gerald) and Jeanette Ann Jones, of Richmond; one niece, Winifred Jones Minchew, of Elm City, N.C.; three nephews, Walter G. Jones III, of Rocky Mount, N.C., Dr. H.L. Jones, of Phoebus, Va., and George C. Jones, of Fredericksburg, Va.; many Harrell and Jones cousins in Virginia and North Carolina; dear friends, Carolyn H Matthews, of Richmond, Va., and Mary Elizabeth Franz, of Edenton, N.C.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434, by the Rev. Michael D. Halley. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N.
