Spike: Nansemond River’s Michael Copeland, left, hits a spike as Warrior teammate Zach Vann looks on during NR’s three-set sweep at King’s Fork Monday evening. Copeland led NR with 14 kills as the Warriors won 25-16, 25-11, 25-23.

Nansemond River’s boys volleyball squad continued picking up steam Monday evening, sweeping city rival King’s Fork 25-16, 26-11, 25-23, for the fifth victory in the last seven matches for the Warriors (5-4, 4-4).

The Warriors made quick work of the first two sets against the host Bulldogs (3-10, 1-7). Nansemond River’s athleticism at the net was too much for King’s Fork to overcome early on.

The final set, while still winding up in the Warrior category, was a back and forth contest.

“I was afraid we’d see a fourth game,” said Nansemond River head coach Michael Blei.

From a 23-21 Bulldog lead, the Warriors won the last four points to keep that from happening. Zach Vann, who finished the match with 20 assists and 13 kills, came through with two big spikes for the last two Warrior points of the night.

Vann and Tyler Brown led the Warrior attack as usual, but as the Warriors continue in the season, more players are making important contributions.

“These are the kind of stats I like to see. I like to see a lot more people getting involved,” Blei said.

In the first set, John Joyce, the center on the Nansemond River basketball team, made repeated plays above the net. The Warriors ran off an 8-0 run on Ryan Berrier’s serve to take a 20-9 lead and take the lead in the match with ease.

King’s Fork, coming off of two wins in five matches at a tournament in Virginia Beach on Saturday, rallied in the final set.

A.J. Jenkins, the main Bulldog force at the net, put down back-to-back taps for kills to give KF a 9-8 lead. Another kill by Jenkins made it 12-11 KF.

The Warriors regained control to take a 17-14 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a 5-0, capped by Alex Washburn’s ace, for a 22-20 edge.

After trading points, leaving a 23-21 KF lead, a missed serve gave the Warriors a point and the serve, and that was the last break the Warriors needed.

Brown finished with 21 assists, 13 kills and three blocks. Michael Copeland added 14 kills. Joyce finished with nine kills and six blocks.

“We’ve still got our passes going too deep. We’ve got to get them closer to the net for our setters,” Blei said.

“They played hard today,” Blei said of his squad. “I’m proud of them. They had a mission today.”

Jenkins led the Bulldogs with nine kills. Richie Parks had seven assists.

On Saturday in the Endless Summer Tournament at the Virginia Beach Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs matched their win total from the last season and a half in one day, going 2-3 and coming within a few points of winning the final match in their division.

King’s Fork beat Tallwood two sets to zero in a semifinal match. The Bulldogs fought back from being down 22-11 in a set against the Lions.

Norview edged the Bulldogs in three sets, with the Pilots winning the last set 15-11, in the final.

King’s Fork travels to face Great Bridge Tuesday evening. Nansemond River hosts Western Branch on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.
