A tornado watch issued this afternoon expired at 9 p.m. with no twisters reported in the city.
The National Weather Service had issued a tornado watch for a large area including the city of Suffolk, effective until 9 p.m.
Hazardous weather was forecast for Northeast North Carolina, Central Virginia and Southeast Virginia as the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee pass through the area.
According to the weather service, there was a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Tuesday, mostly in the afternoon and evening, but the biggest threat locally will be from heavy winds and isolated tornadoes.
Showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rain also are expected in the area on Wednesday and Thursday.
Included in the tornado watch area are Brunswick, Isle of Wight, Surry, Greensville, Mecklenburg, Sussex, Halifax, Southampton and York counties and the cities of Emporia, Newport News, Franklin, Poquoson, Hampton and Suffolk.
A tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area.
