Lady Monarchs crush No. 1 Maryland

Old Dominion’s field hockey team beat its third straight Top 10-ranked opponent with a 4-0 rout over defending national champion Maryland Friday at the Powhatan Sports Complex in Norfolk.
The Lady Terrapins are the top-ranked team in the nation and had a 17-match winning streak. Maryland hadn’t been shutout in a match since Nov. 11, 2007.
Senior Emma Batten, in her first year with ODU after transferring from the University of Bath in England, scored a hat trick with goals in the third minute, 12th minute and 47th minute.
Freshman Kelsey Smither (Lakeland) got one of two assists on Stephanie Kratzer’s goal, coming off a penalty corner in the 56th minute. Smither has a goal and two assists on the season.
The Lady Monarchs (3-0) host No. 3 Virginia Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
