Food giveaway set for Friday

A local church is set to provide food for local residents on Friday.
Higher Ground Outreach Ministry will hand out produce, meat, dry goods and canned goods in the parking lot at 400 Bank St. on Friday morning.
“Hopefully, we can make this a monthly thing,” said Cordell Carter, pastor at Higher Ground Outreach Ministry. “We’re going to try it out this time and see how it works.”
There are no income restrictions or other strings attached to the giveaway, but people are encouraged to get there early to ensure they have a place in line. There is only enough to supply about 200 families with groceries, Carter said.
Elderly citizens will be served first, Carter said. Each family will be asked only how many are in their household and if there is a male head of the household.
Carter said the churches decided to do the outreach near the end of the month to help bridge the gap between assistance checks.
The event has been advertised via fliers and word-of-mouth. The churches also contacted other churches to find out if they knew any members who could benefit.
Carter said the giveaway likely will be over in about an hour and a half, so people should get there early.
“Hopefully, we’ll serve until it’s all gone,” Carter said. “We are going to serve our elderly patrons first.”
The giveaway will be held at 400 Bank St. beginning at 10 a.m.
