Averting a crisis in Colonial Williamsburg

The sign of the rhinoceros, above a historical shop in Colonial Williamsburg, is the namesake of an alternate-reality game available in the historical area through Aug. 31.

Prepare to be transported back in time to 1700s Colonial Williamsburg.

Your mission: Help thwart an evil plot to take down a leader. You will accomplish this mission using Colonial Williamsburg landmarks, your Continental Army Cipherbook, your Set of Orders, continental currency to bribe tight-lipped informants, and your cell phone.

It’s all part of the “RevQuest: Sign of the Rhinoceros” game at Colonial Williamsburg.

“We’re always looking for new ways to be able to embed guests in the historical experience,” said Taylor Stoermer, senior historian for Colonial Williamsburg. “We were thinking a lot about trying to engage younger guests.”

You can begin your adventure by visiting the Colonial Williamsburg website, www.history.org, and solving a code contained in correspondence between you and “368,” the mysterious settler who has summoned you to Williamsburg.

Once you buy your tickets at the Colonial Williamsburg visitor center, you pick up your game packet at the RevQuest booth. There, you also receive your blue handkerchief that identifies you as a Questor.

Then, you can either walk or take the shuttle to the historic area. Once you get there, the adventure begins.

But be careful! You don’t want to get caught doing anything seditious, or else you might get thrown into the public gaol. You mustn’t say anything to anyone about what you’re doing. If you need help, look for the settlers with a blue-and-white-striped piece of fabric somewhere about their person — hanging from a pocket or tied on the basket they’re carrying, for instance. They’re the ones who know about your mission and can help you.

You must meet with 368 to begin your mission. The mysterious 368 meets with Questors on the hour and half-hour between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. near the Prentis Store. But the earlier you meet with 368, the earlier you can save the Revolution.

After your meeting, the quest begins. You’ll know what to do through your Set of Orders, which will direct you to various landmarks throughout the historic area. These landmarks will provide you with clues that you must text to a given number to discover other clues.

The Continental Army Cipherbook is vital to your mission and must be kept with you at all times, lest it fall into the hands of the enemy. You’ll need it to decode messages hidden within documents.

Once you’ve solved the entire Sign of the Rhinoceros, you will be directed to a secret meeting to receive a token of appreciation for defeating the dastardly plot.

So far, more than 5,000 people have participated in RevQuest. The adventures end Aug. 31, so you might want to get there soon if you’re going to save the Revolution.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response,” Stoermer said. “The way the game has been received by the guests has just exceeded our expectations.”

Stoermer said Colonial Williamsburg plans on creating more interactive experiences for guests in the future, building on the success of “Sign of the Rhinoceros.”

“We’re making sure that guests learn from the past in a hopefully entertaining way,” he said.
