Team Evolve’s 10th grade boys basketball team won its way into the championship bracket of the 2011 AAU Division I National Tournament with back-to-back victories in Orlando on Tuesday.
Team Evolve, which has 10 Suffolk kids, with nine from King’s Fork, on its 13-player squad, bounced back from a narrow loss in its opening pool play game on Monday. Evolve beat Kids of Cleveland Basketball Club 61-49 Tuesday afternoon and the Florida Hurricanes 46-43 Tuesday night.
“We were outsized but we played with a lot of heart,” said Team Evolve head coach Lorenza Coltrane.
Finishing second in pool play qualified Team Evolve into the final 64 teams of the national championship for Div. I, the top level of AAU play. Evolve’s round of 64 game was set for Wednesday evening against another Ohio team, Gold Coast.
