Suffolk standouts compete at Wood Bat championship

Nansemond River’s Brandon Lowe is playing with the Canes Prospects select club in the 2011 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship in Marietta, Ga. Lowe, a rising senior for the Warriors, has three runs, three RBI and two doubles in three games. The tournament started Saturday and goes until Friday.

Nansemond River baseball standouts Brandon Lowe and Kyle Moore and First Baptist standout Josh Henderson are playing on their respective Canes Baseball clubs in the 2011 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship in Marietta, Ga. this week.

Moore and Henderson are outfielders on the Canes Baseball team which is off to a 3-0 start through the first three days of group play.

Lowe is a third baseman/shortstop on the Canes Prospects, who have two wins and a tie so far.

More than 200 select teams are in the tournament, being played at 26 high schools in and around the Atlanta area from Saturday-Friday.

Canes Baseball won 8-2 against Illinois Sparks-Carroll on Saturday with Henderson, a rising senior, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base.

Canes Baseball continued its undefeated play with a 4-0 win over Yak Baseball on Sunday and a 10-0 win against Syracuse Braves Blue Monday. Henderson added two stolen bases against Yak and an RBI against Syracuse.

Lowe’s put up lots of offensive numbers in the first three games for the Canes Prospects. He’s 3-for-7 at the plate with three walks, three runs, three RBI, three stolen bases and two doubles. He was in on two successful double plays in the Canes opening 10-2 win against America’s Future Prospects.

The Canes Prospects tied the Florida Diamond Pros 5-5 on Sunday and beat Windward Braves Blue 7-6 on Monday.

Moore, Lowe and Henderson were all teammates on the Canes squad that won the WWBA 16U National Championship last summer. Canes Baseball is based out of Fredericksburg.

This week in Marietta, each team gets five pool play games and the top 48 teams go on to playoff rounds Wednesday-Friday.
