A group of six children creased, folded, glued and colored to create pop-up books at the Suffolk Art Gallery on Wednesday.

The class on origami and pop-up books, led by an art teacher from Hardy Elementary School in Smithfield, was one of the Suffolk Art League’s Wednesday workshop series that is going on through Aug. 3.

“We like to think that they’re creative and fun,” said executive director Linda Bunch. “They’re not classroom-type workshops. They’re more fun.”

The Wednesday workshops are only a few of the many activities planned by the art league this summer. Other events include Summer Art Days on Thursdays and an Art Camp from Aug. 8-12.

On Wednesday, the students in the pop-up book class created a card with a center that folded out in a beak-like shape. Students drew ducks, alligators and other animals around the opening with markers.

The Wednesday workshops last only two hours, so they don’t take up the entire day, Bunch said.

“You still have time to go to the pool and do other things that day.”

Wednesday’s instructor, Dixon Morrow, also will teach classes on comic books and chalk prints this month. On Aug. 3, Kathy Rose will teach a class on repurposing ordinary household materials into handmade jewelry.

Summer art days held each Thursday focus on the beauty of nature, allowing students to learn about everything from Hawaiian flowers to fossils through art projects.

And the art camp in August will introduce children ages 6 to 12 to all things Australia through a variety of art projects.

In addition, two upcoming workshops led by the Suffolk Art Gallery will teach students age 16 and older how to make hand-woven baskets for popcorn and a hand sanitizer bottle.

The hand sanitizer basket workshop will be held on July 31 from 1 to 5 p.m. The popcorn basket workshop will be on Aug. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m.

The fee for both classes is $25, and the deadline is two weeks before each class. For more information, call the Suffolk Art Gallery at 514-7284.
