The Suffolk Humane Society is gearing up for another successful fundraiser, but it needs the help of every animal lover in the community.
The organization’s fourth annual Mutt Strut will be held Sept. 18 at Sleepy Hole Park. The event has become the society’s signature fundraiser that welcomes more than 4,000 people each year.
“It’s a wonderful cause,” Suffolk Humane Society member Kay Hurley said. “It’s a great family event. Each year, we try to make it better and better.”
The society currently is seeking business sponsors to support the event.
“I think it’s good for business,” Hurley said. “Our members and animal lovers want to support the businesses who care about animals. I know I certainly do, and I think and I hope that others are like that too.”
Sponsors who sign on will receive promotion in all advertisements for the event, including those in newspapers and on television, as well as on the society’s website and on event T-shirts.
“We’re happy to take any level of sponsorship,” Hurley said. “You can donate $10, and we’re grateful.”
The organization also is seeking donors who can provide prizes for goody bags and for the highest fund-raisers.
Individuals and teams raise money through a variety of ways leading up to the Mutt Strut. At the event, there are a dog walk, vendors, entertainment, contests and more.
“It’s in honor of cats, too,” Hurley said. “But most cats don’t want to walk on a leash.”
Also, a number of rescue organizations will be in attendance.
“If you’re thinking about a pet, it’s a great way to see who’s available for adoption,” Hurley said.
There also will be a humane education event for children (and adults) to learn how to treat animals better.
The Suffolk Humane Society and City of Suffolk are co-sponsors of the event.
Other sponsors that have already signed on include the Suffolk News-Herald, Prime Media, Sinclair Radio Stations, WAVY-TV, Bennett’s Creek Pharmacy, Mike Duman Auto Sales, Affiliated Animal Care, Academy Animal Care, Emergency Physicians of Tidewater, Nansemond Pet Cremation, Aero Mechanical, Auto and Truck Marketplace, Bayport Credit Union, Best-Way Rent to Own Harbourview, Bronco Federal Credit Union, Carts Unlimited, Chorey and Associates, Farmers Bank, Glenn Development, Johnson, Gardy and Teumer, Physical Therapy Works, Nansemond Vet, Suffolk Ruritan Club, Goose Creek Animal Hospital and Vicki Russo/CAbi.
