Oscar Smith scored two goals in each half to top Lakeland’s boys soccer team 4-1 in a Southeastern District match Wednesday night at Cavalier Park.

The Cavaliers, looking for their first win of the Southeastern season, held off the Tigers for the first 22 minutes of play before eventually falling behind by three goals by early in the second half.

Hustle and contesting every ball in the middle of the field and around the Cavalier penalty box was enough to make things tough much of the way for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough for the Cavaliers to create many scoring opportunities for themselves.

One quick play came close to giving the Cavaliers the lead around 15 minutes into the match. Off a Cavalier throw-in in midfield, Evan Worley connected with a long pass into the center of the field for onrushing midfielder Mike Estienne. Estienne beat the Tiger defense to the ball and got a shot away before the keeper closed in, but his shot went wide left.

Oscar Smith’s first goal was on their first shot on goal for the evening, and the Tigers made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute taking advantage of a free kick to lob a ball into Lakeland’s goalmouth for a headed shot into the net. The Tigers turned a corner kick into a goal six minutes after halftime.

The Cavaliers pushed forward and gained some momentum as the second half progressed, and it paid off with 23 minutes remaining.

Lakeland keeper Kyle Jones sent a normal-looking goal kick down the middle of the field. The ball bounded by a couple Tiger defenders and Cavalier forward Brandon Nordan sprinted by everyone to track down the ball.

Nordan slotted a right-footed shot by the Tiger goalie for the goal, and a rare goalie assist for Jones.

Lakeland couldn’t build on the chance to get back in the match, however. The Tigers answered 1:02 later to make the score 4-1.

Jones finished with nine saves to go with his assist. Oscar Smith outshot the Cavaliers 19-6 in overall shots and had a big advantage in corner kicks and free kicks.

The Cavaliers (1-9, 0-5) play for the third time in three nights Thursday, taking on rival Nansemond River at Arrowhead Stadium at 7 p.m.
