Norfolk State’s softball team swept back-to-back doubleheaders Wednesday and Thursday with junior third baseman Whitney Holland (King’s Fork) playing a big role at the plate in two of the four victories.
The Lady Spartans won 19-1 and 3-1 at Maryland-Eastern Shore in MEAC games on Wednesday.
In the 19-1 rout, Holland hit her second home run of the season as part of going 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI.
At local rival Hampton on Thursday, NSU won with scores of 5-3 and 6-5. In game two, the Lady Spartans rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the final inning. Holland hit a two-run double to tie the game. A pinch runner for Holland wound up scoring the go-ahead run.
Holland’s hitting .291 with 19 RBI on the season. NSU (16-23, 3-6) hosts North Carolina A&T for a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday starting at noon.
Boston College won the Beanpot baseball championship for the 10th season and the second straight spring with an 8-0 win over Harvard Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
The Beanpot tournament, played within the regular season, is contested among BC, Harvard, Massachusetts and Northeastern.
Senior second baseman Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) is a regular starter for the Eagles. Hamlet’s hitting .288 and has made two errors in 164 fielding chances for the season.
BC (15-24, 6-14 ACC) hosts No. 1 Virginia (40-4, 18-3) for a conference series Friday-Sunday.
