A suspect in the death of a 31-year-old Suffolk mother pleaded not guilty in Suffolk Circuit Court on Wednesday.
Larry Nicholas O’Neal entered the pleas to charges of first-degree murder, grand larceny, credit card fraud and credit card theft. He is accused of murdering Katina Jones, the single mother of an 8-year-old daughter, who was found dead in her apartment on Nov. 7.
O’Neal’s jury trial will begin on Oct. 3 and is scheduled to last four days.
The case marked the first time Suffolk Police had set up a Facebook page dedicated to helping solve a single crime. The “Catch Katina’s Killer” page featured a photo of Jones, multiple photos of O’Neal and updates on the investigation.
Jones had worked at the Bridge Road Harris Teeter store for about a year and a half before her death. She and O’Neal knew each other previously and reconnected on Facebook shortly before her death, which provided the impetus for police to use Facebook to gather information on the crime.
Jones was found dead in her apartment in the 4300 block of Crowdy Boulevard off Bridge Road on Nov. 7, when her daughter’s father came to the apartment because he had not been able to get in touch with her. The 8-year-old daughter was with her grandparents that day.
