CHESAPEAKE — Sophomore Sydney Glover led Nansemond River’s softball team in the pitching circle and in the batter’s box Tuesday as the Lady Warriors completed a season sweep over Western Branch with a 4-1 win.
A day after falling in a non-district contest at Landstown, a game that served as a quality warm-up coming off more than a week off thanks to Spring Break, the Lady Warriors (7-6, 6-5) got back to winning ways in the Southeastern District and moved over .500 in the district.
The Lady Warriors jumped in front with two runs in the top of the first, with Glover helping out her cause before she had to toe the rubber.
Glover singled and scored thanks to second-place hitter Shelbi Holloman’s double.
Glover gave up a hit to the Lady Bruin leadoff hitter in the bottom of the first and that was the last hit of the game for Western Branch. Only one more Lady Bruin reached base the rest of the way, thanks to a Lady Warrior error. Glover retired the last 13 hitters she faced in order and totaled six strikeouts.
“It was a great performance by a pitcher. There’s no way you could ask for more,” said NR head coach Tim Tarafas.
“Sydney’s curveball was working real nice and she kept getting the corner with it over and over,” Tarafas said.
Nansemond River added two more runs in the second. Jazmine Card tripled and was knocked in by Glover, who came around to score again. Glover went 3-for-4 at the plate. Holloman and Card added two hits each with Holloman getting two doubles and two RBI.
Nansemond River moves on in district play travelling to Oscar Smith Friday evening.
