Lancer softball has perfect weekend

Longwood’s softball team went 4-0 over the weekend in Farmville, sweeping South Carolina by scores of 3-1 and 8-7 on Saturday and sweeping Charleston Southern 3-1 and 7-5 on Sunday.

Junior infielder Leigh Sexton (King’s Fork) played as a sub in the 8-7 win against the Lady Gamecocks and started in the 7-5 win vs. Charleston Southern.

Longwood (23-8) has won eight of its last 10 games. The Lady Lancers play at Georgetown on Tuesday and at Norfolk St. on Wednesday.

Chowan needed extra innings in both contests but still won both games of a doubleheader Sunday at Belmont Abbey, winning 5-3 in nine innings and 8-5 in eight innings.

Senior outfielder Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) scored a run in the 5-3 Lady Hawk win and drove in a run in game two. Byrd’s hitting .306 with 37 runs, 33 RBI, 12 stolen bases, five triples and three homers on the season.

Chowan (29-17, 15-1 CIAA) plays its last conference doubleheader of the regular season Wednesday at Bowie St.

St. Augustine’s junior and former NCAA Div. II national champion Christopher Copeland (Lakeland) won the high jump, with a best mark of 6-feet-8, at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational in Charlotte on Saturday. Copeland’s personal best is 7-feet-2.25. St. Augustine’s won the team title for the meet.

St. Mary’s split a Capital Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Stevenson Saturday in St. Mary’s City, Md.

The Seahawks (18-14) won game two 5-3 with senior righty Barrett Enix (Nansemond-Suffolk) starting on the mound and going six innings. Enix allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Enix is 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA this season.

St. Mary’s hosts Mary Washington in the first round of the CAC Tournament on Tuesday.

Boston College (13-16, 6-8) won two of three baseball games at Duke Friday-Sunday. Senior second baseman Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) went 4-for-11 with two runs in the series and went errorless through 19 defensive chances in the three games.
