Don’t miss Healthy Kids Day

Line dancing with the Chick-fil-A Cow had kids of all ages dancing at the Healthy Kids Day in the Park event last year.

If you’re looking for something for your children to do to get moving, an event that bills itself as the nation’s largest health day for families is coming soon.

Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation and the Luther YMCA of Smithfield are encouraging all kids and parents to come to Carrollton’s Nike Park on April 16 for “Healthy Kids Day in the Park.”

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature activities such as an Easter egg hung and lunch with the Easter Bunny, tennis and other sports demonstrations, interactive screenings, activities, games and more.

The event is meant to teach healthy habits to children and inspire a lifetime of physical activity, according to a press release. Developing healthy habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever, with about one in three children in the United States overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“In Isle of Wight, we know that parents struggle to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine,” says Darlene Keyt, events and fair coordinator for Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation Department. “Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources. It’s as simple as making a play date with your kids, with two key requirements — be active and have fun.”

The Healthy Kids Day is open to the public, and there is no admission fee.

The parks department and Luter YMCA recommend a few simple activities families can do to play together:

  • Schedule a game night: Play games with the kids that incorporate physical activity, such as Charades.
  • Dance: Turn on your favorite party music and dance. Make this activity more fun with a dance contest.
  • Channel your inner youth: Remember playing hopscotch, jump rope, Simon Says or freeze tag as a kid? Teach your favorite childhood game to your kids and play them together.
  • Play outside: Visit your neighborhood park or camp out in your backyard for some outdoor fun. Get everyone moving with fun sports like soccer, basketball or baseball.
