Evelyn Copeland Singletary was born on March 8, 1937, in Suffolk (Nansemond County), Va. She departed this life on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was the oldest of three children born to the late Lodusta Outland Copeland and Leo Copeland.

She was a graduate of East Suffolk High School and served as a supervisor in the cafeteria of Brookdale Hospital for over 40 years before retiring in 1998.

Evelyn had an early appreciation for the arts. She began her musical training of playing the piano as a young adult.

During her early years of residing in Brooklyn, she was a member of Concord Baptist Church of Christ and later became a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. She received her Certificate of Missionary in 1993.

She united in holy matrimony to John N. Singletary on Dec. 22, 1962.

Evelyn leaves behind to cherish her beautiful memory her devoted husband and life partner of 49 years, John (Sonny) N. Singletary; a devoted and loving daughter, Evelyna Copeland; special granddaughter, Celisha L. Copeland; two great-granddaughters, Kia K. Copeland and Alysisa L. Hill; two sisters, Phyllis Copeland McCary and Ella L. Copeland Arnold; two sisters-in-law, Ida B. Britt and Lorraine McMillian; and many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

Mrs. Singletary’s visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 25 at the funeral home. A home going celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at Gethsemane Baptist Church.
