Georgetown cruised through the second round and into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament with a 79-57 win over local rival Maryland Tuesday night on the Lady Terrapins’ home court in College Park, Md.

GU sophomore guard TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) nailed seven three-pointers and led the Lady Hoyas with a career-high 34 points.

Rodgers, a unanimous first-team All-Big East member for the season, was 7-for-10 from three-point range and 7-for-8 at the line. Rodgers had nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

GU (24-10) scored the first 11 points of the game before Maryland came back to make it 14-14. Rodgers drained three of her three-pointers during a 23-8 GU run over the last part of the first half and the Lady Hoyas led 40-26 at halftime. It was GU’s second win over Maryland this season.

Georgetown, a No. 5 seed in the tournament, advances to play No. 1 seed and No. 1-ranked Connecticut (34-1) on Sunday in Philadelphia. The Lady Huskies are 2-0 against Georgetown this season.

The Lady Hoyas lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago and this is the deepest run into an NCAA Tournament in GU women’s basketball history.
