CHARLOTTE, N.C. – While Suffolk can boast about many basketball standouts on the men’s side of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), a former King’s Fork Lady Bulldog is piling up all sorts of honors for Chowan’s women’s basketball team.

CU junior point guard Ransheda Jennings earned honors for the numbers she put up this season, earning two CIAA Player of the Week awards and a spot on the All-CIAA Team.

During the CIAA Tournament this week at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, Jennings was awarded the United States Marine Corps Excellence in Leadership Award for excellence displayed in the classroom and on the court. Jennings is majoring in sports management.

When asked about her introduction to basketball, Jennings remarked about her early days playing for the Suffolk Department of Parks & Recreation Youth Basketball League. She added she was 8 years old when she started.

After graduation from King’s Fork, with a desire to further her education, Jennings came to Chowan because it was close to home and she liked the friendly atmosphere of the campus. She is the first in her family to attend college.

For the 2010-11 basketball season, Jennings led the Lady Hawks in scoring with an average of 16.5 points. She had 73 steals, 15 blocked shots and 70 assists.

In the first round of the CIAA Tournament, Chowan trailed Livingstone by as many as 17 points in the second half before rallying to win 56-53. Jennings scored 13 points.

Johnson C. Smith, the Southern Division winner in the regular season, ousted Chowan 71-52 in the quarterfinals. The Lady Hawks finished the season 15-13.

Jennings is the daughter of Sharon Jennings and Randy Parker. Her mother is present for the majority of her games and can be heard in the stands cheering for her daughter.
