Cavalier hurdles to regional title

Lakeland senior JaQuan Demiel won the Eastern Region championship in the 55-meter hurdles and finished runner-up in the long jump to lead the Cavalier team placing fourth overall in the region at the Eastern Region Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Boo Williams Sportsplex Saturday.
Demiel set a new Lakeland record with his time of 7.35 seconds in winning the hurdle crown.
Anaquan Peterson turned in two outstanding individual performances as well for the Cavaliers. Peterson was second in the triple jump and third, an inch shy of Demiel, in the long jump.
Lakeland’s 4×200-meter boys relay team finished second, edged out by district rival Indian River.
King’s Fork’s 4×400 boys relay finished second in the region. Qualitra Brown (fourth, 500 meters) and Melinda Hickman (fifth, 1,000 meters) had the top Lady Bulldog performances.
