Nansemond River’s boys basketball team has a week full of important Southeastern District contests before getting to Saturday and a meeting with one of the Northwest Region’s top teams, C.D. Hylton, at the 3rd Annual VirginiaPreps.com Classic at Green Run.
Fans wanting to buy reserved tickets must look ahead a little though. The deadline for buying discounted and reserved tickets for the six straight games at Green Run is Friday at noon.
Anyone wanting to pre-reserve tickets should e-mail tickets@matthewhatfield.com or hatfieldsports2k4@yahoo.com and include the number of tickets wanted. Adult tickets are $8 and children 5-12 are $3. Reserved tickets can be picked up and paid for at the door Saturday. Fans must have an ID to pick up their tickets. General admission tickets at the door will be $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
Aside from the Nansemond River vs. C.D. Hylton game, fans will see Norview (5-9) vs. Deep Run (6-6) tipping the day off at 12:30 p.m. Tallwood (9-2) vs. Potomac (11-1) will follow the NR game at 3:30 p.m. Green Run (6-6) plays Annandale (8-4) at 5 p.m. Booker T. Washington (12-2) faces Middleburg Academy (13-2) at 6:30 p.m. Phoebus (11-2) takes on T.C. Williams (11-0) in the finale at 8 p.m.
Nansemond River (12-1) and C.D. Hylton (10-1) are ranked in the VirginiaPreps Group AAA Top 25 state poll. The Warriors are ranked No. 9 in the state Associated Press Poll.
It will be the fourth game in a five-day span for the Warriors as the whole Southeastern District has a busy slate this week.
NR played at Grassfield Tuesday night. The Warriors (9-1 district) host city rival King’s Fork (8-2 district) in a clash of the top two teams, heading into Tuesday night’s slate, in the Southeastern standings Thursday night. The Warriors beat the Bulldogs 75-69 at KF in December.
NR travels to Oscar Smith Friday night and gets Hylton less than 24 hours later. Hylton hosts district foe Osbourn Park in Woodbridge Friday night.
NR and Hylton are led by senior guards both averaging more than 20 points per game. Ashton Moore is the Warriors’ top scorer and Kendall Hargrove leads Hylton.
Hylton and Potomac are tied atop the Cardinal District in the Northwest Region.
The site of Saturday’s six-game festival carries a little added significance for Nansemond River head coach Ed Young. Young coached Green Run before coming to Nansemond River and it’ll be his first time bringing the Warriors for a game at the Virginia Beach school.
