To the editor:

On Dec. 31, Sergeant Chuck Terrell of the Suffolk Police Department retired after many years of faithful and honorable service to the citizens of Suffolk.

I met Chuck back when I became a probation and parole officer in Suffolk in 1986. We became friends, and I have always treasured that association.

As any of Chuck’s co-workers will attest, he was a stalwart, dedicated and honest cop who always gave 110 percent. He was a member of the SPD Dive Team, and he volunteered for many extra duties during his career.

It was no surprise to hear his fellow officers speak of his loyalty, fairness and friendship when he was given a going-away party recently. Chuck began his service to mankind as a U.S. Marine, and those traits he brought with him from that service.

I have always considered Suffolk Police Department to be a top-notch, professional law-enforcement agency. No small part of the reason for that is the hiring of officers who meet only the highest of standards. Chuck Terrell was an example of those standards, and he will be remembered for his work ethic, his leadership ability and his decency.

Chuck, good luck to you and Donna as you enjoy your well-deserved retirement. Thank you for keeping us safe, and thank you for being my friend.
