The local Alzheimer’s Association chapter recently named the city of Suffolk and its Parks and Recreation department as recipients of its 2010 Group Volunteer Award.

The award is given each year to a group that goes above and beyond forwarding the mission of the association.

The city and Parks and Recreation co-sponsored the 2010 Western Tidewater Memory Walk. The event took place at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina in October. Parks and Recreation assisted in the planning and promotion of the walk and also provided equipment, including tents, tables, chairs and a stage.

“We are honored to be selected for this award,” Parks and Recreation volunteer coordinator Jason Pittman said. “The Alzheimer’s Association does a great job of raising awareness, promoting brain health and building a support system in the Suffolk community for those families that are dealing with this disease. We are pleased to help the Alzheimer’s Association in building a healthier, more aware community, and are thankful for all that they do for our city.”

The award was presented Wednesday during the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual chapter meeting at the MacArthur Memorial Theater in Norfolk.
