Driver residents might see a festive yellow bus around town in the next few weeks, but it will not be a Suffolk Public Schools bus with the driver wearing a Santa hat.

“Pam’s Magic Bus,” as it’s been dubbed, will take all comers on rides throughout the village to judge the area’s Christmas tree lights. The tours are scheduled for the three Fridays before Christmas — Dec. 3, 10 and 17.

Riders need only a canned good for admission to the bus. All food will be donated to the Berea Christian Church food drive.

“We’ll bring a little holiday cheer out here to Driver,” said Jason Gould of Rio Grande Traders. Gould and some friends decorated the bus Tuesday with holiday greenery, bows, window paint, artificial snow and giant Christmas tree ornaments.

Riders will cast their votes for lighted houses by their “oohs” and “ahs.” The tour also will include a poker run, with stops throughout Driver and on Bridge Road. Prizes for the best and worst hands will be awarded. Back in Driver, there will be hot chocolate, cornhole and a surprise Christmas-themed movie character to entertain guests.

“If we get a huge crowd, we’ll just keep running this thing until we can’t run it any more,” Gould said.

The 16-passenger, 1991 bus was donated by a local woman who owns it as a private vehicle. Most of the decorations were provided by Holly Hoffler.

The judging of the Christmas lights is a tradition in Driver but was never an event, Gould said. The “judges” simply drove around in a car and decided on the winners themselves.

During the bus ride, Driver tourists will be entertained by Christmas carols and a live magician.

“For someone to bring a can of beans, they’ll have a good time,” Gould promised.
