Grand Illumination to light up city

Leaves are changing colors, temperatures are falling and city workers are installing oversized, lighted figures and a giant tree at Market Park.
It’s time once again for the annual Grand Illumination, which will be held Friday. As always, visitors will get the chance to sing Christmas carols, partake in refreshments and visit with Santa.
This time, however, visitors to the North Main Street location also can take the opportunity to do something for a good cause. The Youth Advisory Council will be at the event to collect new winter apparel and new or gently used toys for young people in need this holiday season.
The highlight of the event is the lighting of a 32-foot tree with thousands of sparkling white lights. Hot apple cider will be served as visitors sing carols and stand in line to see that special visitor from the North Pole.
The fun begins at 6 p.m. at Market Park, across from the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum at 326 N. Main St. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 514-7267.
