Bennett’s Creek’s junior pee wee football team advanced through the first round of the Mid-South Regional playoffs with a 27-6 win over the Central Virginia Broncos Saturday at Wilson High School.
The Warriors scored a touchdown to get out to a 7-0 lead. The Broncos answered with a long touchdown run to make it a 7-6 BC lead.
“It seemed it was going to be a close game,” said Warrior head coach Pete Teumer.
The Warriors (10-0) outscored their nine regular season opponents 276-19 with a pair of 12-point margins being their closest wins.
On the ensuing Bronco kickoff, the Warriors returned it for a touchdown to regain the momentum. The Warriors scored again on the last play of the first half for a 20-6 lead.
“We didn’t do anything tricky. It was mostly just power football like we’ve played all season,” Teumer said.
“(The Broncos) moved the ball pretty well on a number of their drives, but our defense stiffened up late in the drives to stop them,” he said. No opponent has scored more than seven points on the Warriors this season.
The only setback on the day was the Warriors lost their first turnover of the season, a fumble in the first quarter.
“The kids elevated their game. They rose to the occasion with how they played,” Teumer said.
Bennett’s Creek goes on to the regional semifinals against the Lewisville Titans (N.C.) Saturday in Durham, N.C.
