Individual and city efforts are underway to revive Suffolk’s once-booming tennis community.
A key component in doing that is holding tournaments. To that end, the Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department will host the “Ace it Up” tournament at the Howard Mast Tennis Complex on Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The registration deadline is Wednesday.
“We’d love to see tennis built back up to what it was in its heyday,” said Jason Jones, Parks and Recreation athletic supervisor. “It used to be big here and turned out champions. We want Saturday to be about having fun, networking with people and for people to have a good time.”
Levels 2.5 to 4.5 are welcome to come and play singles, doubles or mixed doubles.
The cost to play is $20 for singles and $10 per player for doubles.
Jones added the department hopes to add round robin leagues in the spring.
To sign up, visit www.suffolk.va.us/parks/athletics or stop by the center behind the downtown Farm Fresh at 1401 N. Main St.
For more information, call the Suffolk Parks and Recreation athletic office at 514-7254 or the Howard Mast complex and ask to speak to Janice Henderson or Randy Davis at 514-7243.
