Suffolk Police have arrested a 22-year-old man and charged him with a Monday evening shooting.
Tory J. Mercer, 22, of the 100 block of Ridge Crest Drive, is charged with malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and shoot, stab or wound.
Police were called to the 1000 block of Cogic Square just after 6 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from city spokeswoman Debbie George. Upon arrival, they found a 48-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. An ambulance took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, George said.
Investigation revealed Mercer was dropping off someone else at the apartment complex when he began fighting with the victim, George said. According to police records, the victim and suspect began arguing, and Mercer went back to his vehicle to retrieve a firearm.
The men began fighting again, and Mercer “broke free and then pulled a handgun and shot the victim once,” George said.
Mercer then left the area, called police and told them he had shot someone, George said.
Mercer was apprehended by police on East Washington Street. He is being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
