A 22-year-old Suffolk man is being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail following his arrest on charges related to the shooting of his father early Thursday morning.
Morris Rashawn Newsome, of the 3600 block of Hennesy Cup Way, was charged with one count of aggravated assault; one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony; one count of shoot, cut, stab or wound; and one count of shooting within an occupied dwelling, according to Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George.
Police were called to respond to a shooting at a residence in the 3600 block of Hennesy Cup Way just before 2 a.m., George said in a press release Thursday afternoon. When they arrived, they found a 47-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim told police that he was shot once while he was asleep in his bed. When he awoke, according to the police report, he saw his son standing over him with a gun. The two men fought, and the father was shot again.
The victim sustained wounds to his head, face, abdomen and arm. He was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Police found the son a short distance away from the home, according to George, and they also recovered a firearm.
