Man killed in South Quay crash

An Emporia man was killed early Monday morning when his pickup truck ran broadside in heavy fog into a tanker trailer carrying milk, according to Suffolk officials.
Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George said the operator of the tanker, Jason Hensley, had become lost on South Quay Road, when he came upon the Blackwater Bridge and realized that his rig was too heavy to meet the bridge’s size restrictions.
Hensley, she said, began backing away from the bridge and was backing onto nearby Wyanoke Trail when Raymond Fields approached the scene in the fog at about 4:20 a.m. and was unable to stop in time.
Fields died at the scene. Hensley was not injured.
Police spent much of the morning investigating the accident. It took wreckers more than two hours to separate the vehicles and clear the scene. The scene was finally cleared at about 11:30 a.m.
George said the incident remains under investigation.
In traffic fatality cases, she explained, “Typically, the cases are reviewed with the Commonwealth’s Attorney before any charges are placed.”
