Former Forest Glen High School and Christopher Newport University basketball star Lamont Strothers is holding free youth basketball clinics at outdoor parks around Suffolk Saturdays July 24, 31 and Aug. 7.

The clinics are for boys and girls, ages 9-15. The clinic will be at Lake Kennedy Park each Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m., at Ida Easter Park from 11 a.m.-noon and at Mary Estes Park from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Strothers owns and runs G.E.S.U.S. Ball (Growth through Education, Sports, Unity and Spirit), a program combining basketball teams, summer camps and programs, mentoring, therapy, counseling, tutoring and spiritual guidance in Newport News and Hampton.

In his playing days, Strothers was drafted in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft, played for Portland and Dallas, and played professionally in the Philippines and Turkey. With 2,709 career points, he’s still CNU’s all-time leading scorer.

A parent or guardian must be present at the clinic to fill out registration forms. Forms will be available on site at each park, or they can be found at www.gesusball.org.
