SYAA 10U softball makes PONY nationals

Softball squads from Windsor, Smithfield, Suffolk and Chesapeake earned berths to the PONY (Protecting Our Nation’s Youth) National Championships by winning the Third Annual PONY Recreational All-Star National Qualifier at Holland Athletic Association June 25-27.
In the 14-and-under division, Windsor defeated Deep Creek in a best-of-three final series. In the 12U division, Smithfield won all five of its games and defeated Suffolk Youth Athletic Association in the championship game.
In the 10U division, Suffolk defeated the Holland Havoc 8-7 in the final. The 10U division was the most competitive division and produced many exciting endings. The division also had the upset of the tournament when Holland beat No. 1-seed Little Creek National in a semifinal game. Sara Matthews out-dueled Little Creek’s pitcher in a 3-2 win.
In the 8U division, Southern Chesapeake defeated Suffolk in the championship game.
Eighteen teams took part in the four age groups. The tourney winners are eligible for the PONY National Championships in Round Rock, Tex. July 27-Aug. 1.
