William Lawrence Pope, 83, of the 600 block of John F. Kennedy Court, died May 19, 2010 at Sentara Obici Hospital. He was a native of Southampton County and son of the late Joe and Bettie Sue Carrol Pope. He was also pre-deceased by a daughter, Laura Cookie Knight and a brother, James L. Pope.
Pope was a United States Army veteran. He retired as the Chief Water Operator at the Portsmouth Water Department after more than 30 years of service. He was one of Jehovah’s witnesses and attended the Kingdom Hall on Whitemarsh Road.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Pope; three daughters, Rebecca C. Moody (Wayne) of Portsmouth, Connie E. Harris of Newport News and Corliss J. David of Portsmouth; one son, Joe Louis Pope, Sr. of Suffolk; three sisters, Dorothy Moore of Newport News, Ada Barclift (Ray) and Betty Francis (William) of Suffolk; two brothers, Willie J. Pope, Sr. (Priscilla) of Kileen, TX and Robert L. Pope (Doris) of Suffolk; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Ruth B. Johnson of Suffolk; four stepchildren, Dennis Johnson, David Johnson, Robert Johnson, all of Suffolk and Faye Griffin of Chesapeake; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on May 24 at the Kingdom Hall, Whitemarsh Road, by Brother Solomon Darden. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday from 6—7 p.m. in the chapel at Crocker Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the Kingdom Hall at 12:30 p.m. Monday, and the family will assemble at the residence at 1 p.m. for the procession to the Kingdom Hall.
