PORTSMOUTH — Dorothy Cannaday Major went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 8, 2010. She died peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Dorothy was born in Max Meadows, Va., on July 17, 1922 and move to Portsmouth in 1941 where she met and married Donald Hunter Major Sr. They were married 67 years.
They moved their family to Suffolk in 1960 where they joined the Oxford United Methodist Church. She and Donald were communion stewards for 25 years at Oxford. In 2005, she and Donald moved back to Portsmouth to live with one of their daughters.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Donald Hunter Major Sr., originally of Saluda, Va., his brother, Page Major, of Hampton, daughter, Carolyn Paige Donovan, of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; daughter, Patricia (Pattie) Liebing and her husband, Pholia C. Liebing, of Portsmouth; son, Donald H. Major Jr., of Suffolk; daughter, Dorothy Jean Vallee, of Newport News.
Dorothy is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Steven Donovan, his wife Justine and their daughter Jessica; Debbie Maloney and her son Tommy; James C. Knight IV, his wife Dana and their two daughters, Mackenzie and Jamie; Rebecca Knight and her daughter, Nadeeka; Sam Linde, her husband Jonas and their son Braeden.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Oxford United Methodist Church, 601 W. Washington St., in Suffolk with the Rev. Ed Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery. Family visitation will be at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
