Brandon Snyder collected four hits and seven Tide relievers held Norfolk State to two hits in a 6-0 win in front of 8,509 fans Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Snyder singled four times to pace Norfolk’s 11-hit attack, while Josh Bell singled and added an RBI triple.
Norfolk’s seven pitchers combined on the two-hit shutout.
The contest was the first between the two teams and benefited the Norfolk State University baseball program.
“I thought we competed well and made a good showing for ourselves and the university. We were aggressive at the plate and our pitchers, for the most part, kept their composure,” said NSU head coach Claudell Clark.
Suffolk native John Rasberry started for Norfolk State in left field and hitting leadoff. Rasberry went 0-for-2 at the plate.
Brandon Hairston and James Taylor each singled for Norfolk State. The Spartans (8-11-1, 1-5-0) traveled to Washington, D.C. for a non-conference game against Georgetown Wednesday afternoon. NSU continues its MEAC schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore in Norfolk.
The Tides open up their regular season on Thursday night against the defending International League Champion Durham Bulls, with first pitch slated for 7:15 pm. Right-hander Chris Tillman is scheduled to start for Norfolk against Durham right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.
