Emergency officials remain on the scene of a shooting on the 200 block of Central Avenue in Suffolk.

Suffolk emergency dispatch received a call at around 3 p.m. of a “fight in progress” on Central Avenue. According to police officials, once officers arrived on the scene, a police officer shot a reported suspect. That unidentified suspect was transported by air to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

At 5:45 p.m., a hospital spokesperson said doctors were still evaluating the victim.

According to witness Daniel Hoffman, who lives down the street, the victim was on the second floor of his residence when a group of teenagers began fighting in front of his house. The victim, reportedly a man in his 40s, came out onto his second-floor balcony and fired a shot into the air to get the teens away from his yard, Hoffman said.

“That man was just trying to stop those kids from fighting,” witness Sharon Warren said.

Another witness, Kay Wilson Cearney, was in her house nearby with her four children and one grandchild. She said the man was shot in his chest, arm and leg when officers arrived on the scene.

“He didn’t bother nobody,” Cearney said.

None of the responding officers were injured in the response.

The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as they are available, a Suffolk spokesperson said.
