Adeline Newsome

SUFFOLK — Adeline Virginia White Newsome entered into eternal happiness from her earthly chores on Nov. 16, 2009 at Sentara Obici Hospital. Adeline was born Jan. 25, 1921 in Suffolk, Va. to Elliott Lunzy White and Minnie Edwards White.
Adeline attended Suffolk Public Schools and Nansemond Collegiate High School. She was a 1942 graduate of Virginia State College for Negroes, now Virginia State University. She was a retired educator from Suffolk City Schools with 36 years of dedicated service to the young people of Suffolk and the community. She went from a one-room school to Florence Bowser Elementary School.
Adeline lead a most productive life. She was a 75-year member of East End Baptist Church and a member of the Sr. Bible Class No. 2. Adeline was a member of the United Teaching Profession and a co-founder of the LBJ/Roosevelt Ricks Civic League.
She was preceded to eternity by her husband, William E. Newsome Sr. and 13 brothers and sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, William E. Newsome Jr. and Irene Newsome; one sister-in-law, Berma H. White, of Suffolk; Godson, Vernon Sanderlyn, of Chesapeake; grandson, the Rev. W. Edmund Newsome, of Durham, N.C.; granddaughter, Joy Marie Newsome, of Richmond, Va.; three devoted friends, Emma Jane Willie, Marsha Williams and Sheila Cooper; caregiver, Lora Walton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and hundreds of former students.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at East End Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Mark Croston. Interment will be at Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
