Suffolk Public School officials announced Thursday evening all city schools will be closed Friday in response to heavy flooding associated with a nor’easter.

According to school spokesperson Bethanne Bradshaw, the decision was based on the number of closed roads throughout the city and the likelihood that flooding will remain treacherous throughout Friday. There has not been a decision made on when — or if — the two missed days will be made up.

With the announcement, Suffolk joins other area schools and systems that have also decided to close Friday.

Earlier in the day, officials with Isle of Wight County schools announced all schools and offices will be closed. Nansemond Suffolk Academy officials announced late Thursday afternoon that it, too, would be closed Friday and has rescheduled its playoff football game versus Portsmouth Christian to Monday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.

Earlier in the day, while officials were still deciding whether to close schools, Bradshaw said the school system does not take the decision to close schools lightly, as the system serves more than 14,000 children.

“We are these children’s parents when they are not at home,” Bradshaw said. “We take the fact that these children are in our care from the time they leave home to the time they get home very seriously.”

Suffolk city spokesperson Debbie George said all city offices will reopen Friday, but will do so two hours later than normal.
